Claims handling scores fell slightly below average, but Geico's rates, which are the second lowest in our study. But it can make it a great alternative for drivers looking for affordable coverage.

6. Allstate

Allstate Corporation is an American insurance company headquartered in Northfield Township, Illinois, near Northbrook since 1967. Founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck and Co., it was spun off in 1993. The company also operates personal lines insurance in Canada.

Allstate is a large corporation, and with 2018 revenue of $39.8 billion, it ranked 79th on the 2019 Fortune 500 list of America's largest corporations by total revenue. Travelers' customer service score is lower than seven other insurance companies in our study, but it ranks #1 in our Claims Handling subcategory, as well as #3 in the Most Likely Renewal category. Travelers also receives an above-average score for policy renewals and offers premiums that are typically lower than the national average. So it is also a very good choice for car drivers.

Overall, customers are generally satisfied with the ease of opening a policy, but Progressive places last in our Best for Customer Loyalty category and scores below average in all other sub-ratings in our study. Progressive customers also report that they are less likely to renew their policy or recommend the insurer to other drivers or people. However, those with a DUI may be able to unlock savings with Progressive.

9. AAA

AAA is new to our survey, tying with Progressive for eighth place. Its score is below average in every category we analyzed. However, it ranks 6th in our most likely to renew sub-ranking, beating out Allstate, Farmers, Progressive and American Family as well. AAA also has the highest average premiums in our study, but drivers considering AAA should get a quote to see if their individual rate is more competitive.

10. American Family

American Family Insurance, also abbreviated as AmFam, is an American privately held mutual company that focuses on property, casualty, and auto insurance and also offers commercial, life, health, and homeowners insurance, as well as investment and retirement planning products. A Fortune 500 company, its 2017 sales exceeded $9.5 billion.

It should not to be confused with American Family Home Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Munich Re, American Modern Insurance Group, Inc., or American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus.
